Medical devices range from everyday items such as sticking plasters, syringes or spectacles, over specialised equipment such as wheel chairs and hearing aids, to extremely high tech devices such as pacemakers, intelligent contact lenses or artificial limbs. As diverse as this sector is, the common thread is that medical devices enable people to live longer, more productive lives while significantly contributing to the EU economy. It is an industry that in Europe alone employs over 540,000 people and has a market size of roughly €90 billion.
