Port of Salalah sets record for metric tons handled

Oman's Port of Salalah's General Cargo Terminal (GCT) handled a record number of metric tons in September, topping 1.2 million.

The previous record, set in June, was just over 1.18 metric tons.

"The achievement is not easy to accomplish in this industry and requires a great deal of collaboration, planning, and modern management that makes necessary machinery available for such an accomplishment," Port of Salalah Chief Executive Officer David Gledhill said.

Ahmed Qatan, general manager of GCT, which oversees port operations, agreed.

"Breaking records twice in 2015 is an indication of a proper planning and effort toward providing high quality services in the port," Qatan said. "The GCT handled over 10 million metric tons of cargo in 2014 and is expected to handle over 12 million in 2015."

The Port of Salalah has connections with 54 ports across the globe as well as ships that transport containers to markets in Southeast Africa, India and Gulf Cooperation Council states.
