Seven local high school students were recently named winners of the Lauren Brown Memorial Scholarship by the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC).

Named after a former BACC employee who passed away from cancer at the age of 29, the scholarship is given to high school seniors who are employees of chamber member organizations, have parents employed by the chamber, or are students of Barrington High School. The scholarship is funded by chamber members and recipients must be planning to obtain a higher education degree in business, marketing or a communications-related field.

Recipients of the 2016 Lauren Brown Memorial Scholarship are Abigail Elo, Griffin Bailey, Justin Spiegel, Katharine Mena, Lance Gasher, Laura Mena and Rachel Currie.

"Each year, BACC awards the Lauren Brown Memorial Scholarship to local high school students to help with expenses of higher education that builds future careers," BACC President and CEO Suzanne Corr said. "The scholarship can be awarded to students attending universities, community colleges, vocational or trade school programs."

BACC awarded $3,500 among the seven students, with the scholarship ranging from $500 to $1,000.

The winners were announced during BACC's 39th Annual Spotlight on Barrington's Stars Luncheon.
