Tech giant Samsung has released limited quantities of its new virtual reality (VR) module, the Gear VR Innovator Edition, in the United Arab Emirates, Samsung said on Monday.

The Gear VR Innovator Edition incorporates a Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone into a head module to support the burgeoning array of virtual-reality entertainment.

Recognizing the growing interest in personal virtual-reality platforms, Samsung partnered with the Southern California-based company Oculus VR to develop the new technology.

“Samsung is incredibly excited to launch our first virtual-reality device, the Gear VR Innovator Edition,” Hayssam Yassine, head of the IT and Mobile Team at Samsung Gulf Electronics, said. “We have worked in partnership with Oculus, a leader in virtual-reality technology, to provide the most accessible and immersive virtual-reality experience to our users.”

The Gear VR Innovator Edition comes loaded with a touch pad, back button and focus-adjustment wheel for an easy-to-use virtual reality device. The flexible, lightweight materials make the headgear comfortable for users to wear while exploring a virtual 3D world.

Samsung and Oculus are working with entertainment companies to build up a diverse selection of games, movies and other entertainment options, but new VR technology could lead to other applications. The Gear VR Innovator Edition has potential for new uses for enterprise, such as virtual training simulation for vehicles or aircraft, and interactive learning experiences for the classroom.
