Saudi Aramco initiative decreases gas flaring

Saudi Aramco said this week its Safaniyah Onshore Producing Department (SONPD) has completed an initiative to decrease the amount of gas flaring in its procedures by using an in-house flare recovery system developed at the Tanajib plant.

The SONPD’s recovery system is designed to eradicate gas flaring, which happens on a daily basis. Reducing the gas flares will help in protecting the environment from dangerous emissions, including sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide.

While the project was still being designed, studies were conducted to ensure that the system would not compromise the plant’s operational safety after it was installed. When the process and safety impact studies were complete, the SONPD went ahead with the development process while ensuring minimum cost.

Since the system was instituted in 2015, it has recovered 0.41 million standard cubic feet per day while having no negative effect on the plant’s operations.
