The Abu Dhabi Center for Governance recently worked with the GCC Board Directors Institute (BDI) to organize a seminar on the changing role of the board secretary at the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce Tower in Abu Dhabi.

Representatives from more than 80 public and private companies in the United Arab Emerites attended the seminar, which was part of a larger series about spreading the culture of governance among companies and corporations, according to a chamber announcement.

Jane Valls, the executive director of BDI, spoke at the event and said that the board secretary has a large role in bridging the gap between executive management and the board of directors. This position, in large corporations, can organize board meetings and keep an open channel between the company’s CEO, major shareholders and the chairperson.

Duties and tasks performed by the board secretary include providing professional and administrative support to the general assembly and the board and advising the board and senior management on various matters related to governance, among other duties, according to the announcement.
