ADNOC has reached a significant milestone in its environmental efforts by planting its five millionth mangrove seedling at the Al Nouf mangrove forest in Abu Dhabi. The event was marked by Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO, who personally planted the seedling.
This achievement puts ADNOC past the halfway point toward its target of planting 10 million mangroves by 2030. The initiative is part of a broader national goal to plant 100 million mangroves across the United Arab Emirates by the same year.
Dr. Al Jaber stated: “Environmental stewardship is central to ADNOC’s strategy and underpins our commitment to creating sustainable long-term value for the UAE and the communities in which we operate. We have made excellent progress towards our target to plant 10 million mangroves by 2030 by leveraging advanced technologies to support biodiversity and responsibly provide the energy that people and economies need to thrive.”
The company’s program began in 2023 and utilizes artificial intelligence-enabled drones developed within the UAE for large-scale, efficient planting. In addition, machine learning tools are used to monitor mangrove health, growth, and restoration success over time.
Community involvement has played an important role in these efforts. In 2025 alone, more than 1,000 volunteers participated in planting activities, contributing thousands of hours toward conservation work. Since the start of the program, about 6,000 individuals—including youth volunteers from schools, community groups, People of Determination, and ADNOC employees—have taken part in various initiatives such as coastal clean-ups and biodiversity restoration.
In 2024, ADNOC joined forces with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) through participation in the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative. This partnership aims to accelerate restoration projects, promote research activities, and encourage greater private sector and community engagement. These actions are aligned with both national programs like Plant the Emirates Program as well as international efforts such as the World Economic Forum’s One Trillion Trees Initiative.
