Dubai-based Agratech Farms announced Oct. 5 it will expand its hydroponic farming operations in Portugal by adding 470 hydroponic A-frames and approximately 5 acres to its site on the outskirts of Lisbon.

Agratech has several hydroponic farms in the Middle East where it has succeeded in adapting the system to the region’s climate. Agratech also operates in Hong Kong, Romania and Spain.

Agratech is a pioneer in investing in vertical farming hydroponics in the Portuguese market.

The A-frame hydroponic system allows a larger number of plants grow in a limited area and with no need of soil. The climate at the greenhouse is monitored by a computer system that regulates the temperature, carbon dioxide levels and humidity. Besides optimizing the use of space, this system also consumes 90 percent less water than traditional farms.
