More than 100 will-be Chinese retailers last week toured the under-construction, Chinese-themed “Dragon City” shopping mall in Bahrain’s Diyar Al Muharraq.

The delegation, made up of signed Dragon City leaseholders, represents a group of China-based business owners expected to fill 782 individual retail store spaces when the tourist attraction opens this coming September.

Diyar Al Muharraq officials say they have leased 75% of those spaces thus far. They expect to lease 90 percent before Dragon City opens to the public.

“(Dragon City) will serve to further enhance trade and investment relations between the Kingdom of Bahrain and China and strengthen bilateral relations in all other sectors between the two great countries,“ said Dr. Maher Al Shaer, Chief Executive Officer of Diyar Al Muharraq.

Dragon City is a partnership between Diyar Al Muharraq and Chinamex, the China Middle East Investment and Trade Promotion Center. Construction on the project began in Sept. 2014.

Chinamex will operate and market Dragon City. An estimated 1,000 Chinese nationals live in Bahrain.

Diyar Al Muharraq is a $3.2 billion, private, 12 square kilometer master planned community of the northern coast of Bahrain.
