HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), recently hosted Vugar Ahmadov, Chairman and CEO of Azerishiq, in a meeting aimed at discussing shared goals in energy innovation and sustainability. The talks focused on utilizing expertise and advanced technologies to enhance bilateral cooperation.
Present at the meeting were Waleed bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence; Dr. Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources; and Marwan Bin Haidar, Executive Vice President of Innovation and the Future at DEWA.
The discussions centered on potential collaborations within the electricity sector. Emphasis was placed on advancing sustainable energy solutions, improving grid resilience, and accelerating the transition to green energy.
Al Tayer emphasized Dubai’s clean energy ambitions aligned with several strategies: UAE Net Zero Strategy 2050, Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. These initiatives aim for Dubai to meet all its energy needs from clean sources by 2050. He highlighted DEWA’s key projects like the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park which is expected to achieve a production capacity of 7,260 megawatts by 2030 using both photovoltaic and concentrated solar power technologies.
Al Tayer also pointed out DEWA’s achievements in global performance indicators. In 2024, DEWA reported electricity transmission losses at just 2%, well below the global average of 6%-7%. Water transmission losses were also low at 4.5%. Furthermore, DEWA set a record for lowest customer minutes lost with just 0.94 minutes per year compared to an EU average of 15 minutes.
He further discussed DEWA’s use of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies in advancing artificial intelligence (AI) across operations to enhance service quality and efficiency while ensuring sustainable growth in energy sectors.
Reaffirming DEWA’s commitment to global sustainability agendas, Al Tayer expressed interest in exchanging best practices with Azerishiq particularly regarding clean energy adoption in Azerbaijan.
The meeting underscored international partnerships’ critical role in speeding up the global energy transition. Both parties agreed that collaboration on smart grid technologies, renewable energy integration, and capacity-building programs is crucial for achieving energy security and sustainability.
