Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) recently acknowledged the significant contributions of its female engineers in the energy, water, and sustainability sectors during International Women in Engineering Day. Celebrated annually on June 23, the event included various activities such as workshops and panel discussions to highlight these contributions.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, stated, “On International Women in Engineering Day, we commend DEWA’s female engineers across various disciplines, who have demonstrated high competence in leading energy and water projects.” He emphasized that Emirati women play a crucial role as experts and leaders in clean energy transitions. At DEWA, women constitute 85% of the total female workforce with 1,946 employees overall; 753 are in engineering roles while 452 hold leadership positions.
Al Tayer also referenced a UNESCO report titled “Closing the Gender Gap in Science,” noting that globally women represent about a third of scientific researchers. However, at DEWA’s Research and Development Centre, over half of the staff are women with postgraduate qualifications.
Female engineers at DEWA appreciate the supportive environment provided by the organization. Amal Koshak highlighted that “DEWA provides a role model in supporting female engineers,” ensuring equal opportunities for creativity and development. Dr Aaesha Alnuaimi added that senior management believes strongly in empowering women across all roles.
Fatima Al Jokar expressed that through initiatives like the Women’s Committee, DEWA aims to enhance women’s skills and community service contributions. Aysha Mohammad Alremeithi noted efforts to amplify young female engineers’ voices through the Youth Council.
Maryam Khansaheb praised DEWA’s supportive environment for motivating innovation among women. Hind Almteiri remarked on DEWA’s commitment to efficiency and gender equality through pioneering projects led by female engineers. Fatma Karim mentioned that recognizing hardworking female engineers encourages further excellence. Noura Al Hammadi concluded by emphasizing investment in women’s competencies at DEWA.
