Plastic pollution remains a significant environmental issue globally, with the UN Environment Programme estimating that 430 million tonnes of plastic are produced annually. A third of this plastic ends up in natural ecosystems and marine habitats, exacerbating environmental degradation, threatening biodiversity, and posing risks to human health.

On World Environment Day, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) reiterated its commitment to combating plastic pollution and promoting sustainability. The day is observed annually on June 5th and was themed “Ending Plastic Pollution” this year.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, stated: “In line with our commitment to supporting local and international environmental initiatives… we are intensifying our proactive efforts by turning challenges into opportunities. We are working to enhance environmental sustainability through pioneering initiatives and projects that support national and global efforts to combat plastic pollution…”

DEWA’s Circular Economy Strategy aims to optimize resource use while generating social and economic value. This strategy is based on five principles: Circular Design and Use of Circular Material; Optimised Asset Management; Value Retention and End-of-Life Treatment; Renewable Energy, Energy and Water Efficiency; and Circular Partnerships.

In October 2022, DEWA launched a smart initiative for recycling plastic bottles and aluminum cans using machines operated via the Smart Office app for employees. By Q1 2025, 760 employees recycled nearly one million bottles and cans, diverting over 13 tons of waste from landfills.

DEWA also engages in various environmental activities throughout the year. In collaboration with the Emirates Marine Environmental Group during the ‘Year of Community’, DEWA launched a campaign at Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary involving over 500 participants who planted mangrove trees and collected plastic waste.

These initiatives align with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including responsible consumption (Goal 12), climate action (Goal 13), and protecting life below water (Goal 14). Through these efforts, DEWA positions itself as a leader in both local and global environmental stewardship.
