The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) Women’s Committee organized an event to commemorate International Women in Engineering Day. This initiative underscores DEWA’s dedication to empowering women within the engineering sector. The event included panel discussions, workshops, and various activities, attracting over 60 female employees from different divisions of DEWA.
Fatima Al Jokar, Chairperson of DEWA’s Women’s Committee, highlighted the importance that DEWA’s management places on empowering women, especially in the energy and water sectors. She stated that DEWA annually celebrates this day to acknowledge the contributions of female engineers and to foster innovation and knowledge exchange among them. “We consider this day a key annual milestone, as it is not only a celebratory occasion but also a practical confirmation of the advanced position that Emirati women have achieved in leading vital projects, especially in clean energy, in support of sustainable development,” said Al Jokar.
The event featured a session titled ‘Trailblazing Women: Overcoming Challenges and Expanding Horizons’, with Marwa Saeed Al Mamari, the first Emirati aerospace engineer, sharing her journey. Maryam Abdulaziz Khansaheb moderated the panel. Al Mamari remarked, “Engineering is not just about building systems; it’s about building a future where innovation, resilience and inclusion go hand in hand.”
Another session titled ‘DEWA’s Female Engineers: Stories of Success and Empowerment’ discussed challenges and opportunities for women in engineering. The panel included Afra Saif Alsuwaidi, Mazoon Ghalib Mohammed, and Buthaina Salem Alshamsi, moderated by Fatma Jaffar Karim.
The event also hosted competitions aimed at fostering team spirit. The Women’s Committee launched the fifth edition of ‘#Your Day … as an Engineer’, encouraging female engineers to share their professional journeys.
Participants expressed gratitude towards DEWA’s leadership for creating an environment conducive to women’s empowerment and work-life balance. They also commended the Women’s Committee for initiatives focused on developing technical and leadership skills aligned with DEWA’s strategic goals.
