Female students from
Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar recently joined their
counterparts in 50 cities around the world in a virtual “thought
leadership” forum called Women in Data Science (WiDS).

The
Arab Women in Computing (ArabWIC) Qatar chapter, in collaboration
with Stanford University, planned and organized Qatar’s portion of
the event, which was held at the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU)
Research Complex.

“As the
future of technology points to data science, artificial intelligence,
machine learning, it is clear that those who pursue these fields will
have long-lasting careers,” Hanan Alshikhabobakr, president of
ArabWIC Qatar and a research associate at Carnegie Mellon University
in Qatar, said. “We encourage women to actively participate in
these fields, and these events help promote mentorship, networking
and collaboration among them.”

Featured speakers
included Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar’s Houda Bouamor, Rita
Singh and Noora Fetais. Bouamor is a visiting associate teaching
professor of computer science, Singh is a systems scientist and
Fetais is the director of KINDI Center for Computing Research.
