Free University of Brussels issued the following announcement on Jan. 9.

As part of the International Chair for the History of the Second World War, the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences program Monday, January 28, 2019 at 20h the musical ” East West Street: a Song of Good and Evil ” of the 2019 laureate Professor Philippe Sands (University College London).

East West Street: A Song of Good and Evil is a musical show inspired by the book Retour à Lemberg(Albin Michel, 2016) by Philippe Sands , author and lawyer specializing in the defense of human rights, who explores the origins of concepts of genocide and crimes against humanity.

Based on his grandfather’s and three men’s cross paths in the heart of the Nuremberg trial – Cambridge University professor Hersch Lauterpacht, Polish prosecutor Raphael Lemkin and Hitler’s lawyer Hans Frank – this personal exploration of the origins of modern justice is punctuated by the words, worn by Katja Rietmann and Philippe Sands, the archive images and music that linked these men, from Bach and Beethoven to Rachmaninoff and Leonard Cohen, performed by the famous bass-baritone Laurent Naouri and the pianist Guillaume de Chassy and directed by Nina Brasier.

A public lecture by Philippe Sands entitled Back to Lemberg, then and now will be held the day after the show, on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at 10am, at the ULB in audience R42.4.502. Free entry.

This show and this conference are organized as part of the International Chair in World War II history at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, which annually discerns the author of an original contribution by awarding him the Baron Velge Prize. This year, Philippe Sands is honored both for his book Retour à Lemberg and for the play presented in Brussels on this occasion.

ABU DHABI UNIVERSITY: Reaching 75% Construction Completion

ADU an internationally recognized academic institution for quality education and applied research, has announced completion of 75% of the construction of its AED300 million new campus in Al Ain’s Asharej district. With over 400 laborers working on the development of the new campus, applying the highest health and safety standards and the safety regulations of the Civil Defense for 2018, the building also meets One-Pearl Estidama requirements for design and operation sustainability.
