Gemalto, a world leader of digital security, recently opened a state-of-the-art facility as the Center of Excellence to instruct the Royal Oman Police (ROP) in knowledge transfers and best sharing practices.

Located within the ROP’s premises, the new center was specifically designed to teach ROP leaders and staff about issuance processes and technologies involving ePassports and eIDs for the Sultanate’s citizens. The center has the latest technology from Gemalto, including back-end systems that will issue both ePassports and eIDs.

“Over the years, Gemalto consistently supported us being a pioneer in our region when it comes to government programs,” Major Gen. Sulaiman Al-Harthy, assistant inspector general for the Royal Oman Police, said. “Gemalto’s ability to offer a pooling documents infrastructure puts us in a unique position to deliver the best experience to our citizens.”

After receiving their training, ROP instructors will then instruct their own front-desk personnel.

“Oman has been a leader in implementing advanced eGovernment solutions, being the first country in the GCC to issue its citizens with electronic ID cards in 2002, in cooperation with Gemalto,” Hisham Surakhi,

Gemalto’s senior vice president for government programs in the Middle East, said. “The newly built Center of Excellence, coupled with its state-of-the-art technology will further help Oman achieve their digital vision for the country.”
