Ahmed Bin Sulayem, president of the Kimberley Process (KP) in the UAE, recently met with the president of Ghana, John Mahama, as part of KP’s Africa
Initiative.

Ghana’s president discussed
the country’s commitment toward the mandates and operating criteria of KP. He
highlighted recent governmental changes in Ghana, mentioning the law on
repatriation that makes 85 percent of revenues from exports of crude material
returns to the county.

Now that all transaction of exports are recorded and
indicated by the Bank of Ghana, diamonds from the country are sought around the
globe. This is especially the case considering the country’s reputation for
adhering to Kimberley Process requirements. Mineral exports from Ghana accounted
for $2,515 million in the first quarter of 2016.

The Africa Initiative of KP
is an attempt to maintain complete presence in the continent’s
diamond-producing nations. As part of the initiative, Sulayem is visiting the
Central African Republic, Angola, South Africa and Burkina Faso, among other
African countries.
