The International Road Transport (TIR) System, the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) new customs transit system, is the focus of a three-day workshop being conducted by the Automobile and Touring Club for the UAE (ATCUAE ) in Dubai through Tuesday.
The new system is meant to improve UAE’s speed of trade and transport links with nearby countries by decreasing the amount of time that trucks wait at frontiers from days to mere hours. All seven of the UAE’s custom authorities have agreed to use the new system, which will be implemented before the end of the year.
Experts from the International Road Transport Union will attend the event to emphasize the efficiency of the TIR’s highly computerized system.
“The introduction of the TIR system will be a milestone in the development of the UAE’s land transport sector, which has a key part to play in the growth of the national economy,” ATCUAE President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said. “We’re grateful for the support we have received from the Federal Customs Authority, and of course the customs departments in all seven emirates, and together we are working to bring the TIR system into full operation by the end of the year.”
The TIR system will link 68 countries while protecting revenue for each country that goods travel through by offering an international guarantee of taxes due. Standardized and reduced controls, in addition to international customs documents, will minimize the need for physical inspections of goods.
