Omantel said Tuesday it will provide a 1,081-square-mile telecommunications network to serve BP Oman’s Khazzan Gas Project.
The agreement will provide fixed and mobile voice services as well as broadband services to Khazzan gas field – Block 61, located between the Ad Dhahirah and Ad Dakhiliya governorates. The services will help not only BP Oman, but also its contractors and other partners working away from of the gas field.
“Geographically, Oman has a challenging terrain, which often makes it difficult for our teams who operate in remote areas to stay connected and communicate within the sultanate, or indeed with our colleagues around the world,” BP Oman Regional IT&S Integration Manager Saif Al Sawafi said. “Omantel has a unique and unrivaled experience in designing and operating communications networks in remote areas and we are confident that the Khazzan Project will benefit immensely from this new partnership.”
Omantel officials said the communications package will not only improve communication between people but also between workers and the operation’s equipment.
“Our partnership with BP highlights Omantel’s deep experience in meeting the needs of clients in the oil and gas sector, who are often located in very remote regions of Oman,” Omantel Business General Manager of Sales Ahmed Mohammed Al Nasri said. “Deploying our technical experience and expertise on this project means that BP Oman will be able to conduct instantaneous well monitoring while on-site staff will be reliably connected with high quality mobile and fixed solutions and Internet broadband.”
The Khazzan project is expected to come online toward the end of next year. When operational, it is expected to produce up to one third of Oman’s daily gas requirement.
