The Qatar-based mobile communications company called Ooredoo has pledged its commitment to the United Nations set of Sustainable Development Goals; the U.N.’s global development goals include the eradication of extreme poverty, as well as improving the lives of struggling people and creating an all-round healthier world for generations to come.
In order for the U.N. to achieve those ambitious goals, it is imperative to leverage the reach and capabilities of mobile technology, especially in the least developed countries.
The unprecedented social impact of mobile technology makes Ooredoo’s commitment to those goals all the more important. Mobile technology Drives extraordinary economic growth and new ways of delivering education, health and rural development. The U.N.’s development goals hinge upon an interconnected world of communication and knowledge sharing, information and communication technologies.
Ooredoo CEO Nasser Marafih said the Global Goals set an ambitious agenda that encourages the company and each individual to meet the challenge of creating a better world.
“The reach of mobile technology, particularly into underserved communities, is unprecedented and we know it can help make a direct contribution to nearly all of the issues the goals address,” Marafih said. “We are passionate about mobile technology as a tool to effect positive social and economic change.”
To that end, Marafih said the company will start working on new initiatives based on the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. The new initiatives will be in areas such as gender equality, health services and infrastructure innovation.
