The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry said Monday that a new Portuguese Business Council has been established in Dubai, under the chamber’s auspices, to enhance economic relations between
the two nations.

The 25-member council was officially launched with the First General Assembly at the Dubai chamber headquarters, the 25-member delegation heard remarks by Atiq Juma Nasib, Chamber SVP of
commercial services; and Portugal’s ambassador to the UAE, Jaime Leitão.

“It is time to think beyond Europe, to extend your business
to the rest of the world, and there is no better place to expand than from
Dubai, given the logistics and the international links, specifically to Africa,
where Portugal has historic ties,” Dubai Chamber Senior Vice President of Commercial Services Atiq Juma Nasib said at the assembly.

Portugal Ambassador to the UAE Jaime Leitao praised the council’s formation as a contributing factor to
strengthening in associations. Portuguese enterprises are sure to benefit from participation,
he said.

The Portuguese Business Council said that non-oil commercial
revenue between the UAE and Portugal for goods and services in 2015 totaled
$500 million. Its members anticipate that new bilateral relations are likely to
see that amount double to $1 billion by 2017.
