The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) recently completed a project
aimed at improving water, sanitation and hygiene in the states of
Central Equatoria and Northern Bahr El-Ghazal in South Sudan.

The
work was undertaken to help Sudan recover from deadly outbreaks of
cholera, diarrhea and other communicable diseases. The improvements
will benefit approximately 85,000 people.

After completing
the project, QRCS hosted an inauguration ceremony at the Al-Amal
Camp, attended by Nawal Kamel, QRCS’s Eastern and Central Africa
coordinator, along with representatives from health, water resources
and social welfare ministries, and chieftains, camp authorities and
members of international organizations.

The project was a joint
effort by QRCS and Adeso, an African charity and development agency,
with funding from the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD). The
project’s overall goal is to help prevent pandemics on the African
continent, especially in South Sudan, where displaced populations
deal with poor conditions caused by political unrest. It was QRCS’s
first effort in the region.
