His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar, has officially inaugurated the Ras Laffan and Mesaieed solar photovoltaic power plants. These facilities have a combined capacity of 875 megawatts (MW), significantly increasing Qatar’s solar energy production to 1,675 MW.
The inauguration ceremony took place in Ras Laffan Industrial City. Attendees included His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, alongside other executives and officials from Qatar’s energy sector.
Minister Al-Kaabi emphasized the importance of these new solar power plants in advancing towards the goals set out in the Qatar National Vision 2030. He noted that they represent an important step in balancing economic development with environmental protection. This aligns with QatarEnergy’s Sustainability Strategy to generate over 4,000 MW of renewable energy by 2030.
“The construction of solar power plants is one of Qatar’s most important initiatives to reduce carbon dioxide emissions,” said Minister Al-Kaabi. “These plants are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 4.7 million tons annually.” He added that the two plants will contribute about 15% of Qatar’s total peak electricity demand, a figure projected to rise to 30% with the future operation of the Dukhan solar power plant.
Minister Al-Kaabi also highlighted that Qatar is now using its own national expertise for constructing and operating such projects. He expressed pride in their achievements and thanked all involved parties for their contributions.
In his concluding remarks, Minister Al-Kaabi expressed gratitude towards His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for his support and guidance on energy projects.
