QatarEnergy has announced the awarding of an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for the onshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant of the North Field West (NFW) project. This development is part of Qatar’s broader LNG expansion plan, which aims to increase the country’s production capacity to 142 million tons per annum (MTPA).

The new EPC contract covers two LNG mega-trains with a combined output of 16 MTPA. The scope also includes facilities for gas treatment, natural gas liquids recovery, and helium extraction. Alongside LNG production, the project is expected to yield about 175,000 barrels per day of condensate, ethane, and liquefied petroleum gas.

The contract was awarded to a joint venture comprising Technip Energies, Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC), and Gulf Asia Contractor (GAC). A signing ceremony took place at QatarEnergy’s headquarters in Doha with senior representatives from all involved companies present.

His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President & CEO of QatarEnergy, signed the agreement alongside Mr. Arnaud Pieton of Technip Energies, Mr. Samer Khoury of CCC, and Dr. Ravi Pillai of GAC.

“This contract represents an important addition to the world’s largest LNG expansion project and reinforces Qatar’s commitment to meeting the growing global LNG demand,” said Minister Al-Kaabi.

He further stated: “The North Field West project follows in the footsteps of the North Field East (32 MTPA) and South (16 MTPA) projects, placing strong emphasis on environmental performance. Key features include a carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) capacity of 1.1 MTPA, which takes us closer towards achieving our target of capturing and sequestering more than 11 MTPA of CO2 by 2035.”

Minister Al-Kaabi expressed his gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani for his guidance and support toward QatarEnergy and its initiatives in the energy sector.

He also acknowledged the efforts made by teams from QatarEnergy, QatarEnergy LNG, as well as partners Technip Energies, CCC, and GAC in advancing this project.

The NFW project will feature additional environmental measures such as jetty boil-off gas recovery facilities that are expected to recover an equivalent of 0.42 MTPA CO2 emissions. Furthermore, a significant share of its electricity needs will be met using power generated from solar plants within Qatar.

Production from NFW is scheduled to begin by late 2031.
