Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of Qatar, a foundation stone ceremony for a new blue ammonia plant took place in Mesaieed Industrial City. The event was led by His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani, Deputy Amir and Chairman of the Board at QatarEnergy.
The ceremony included the presence of Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, along with senior executives from organizations involved in the project.
The facility is set to be the largest blue ammonia plant worldwide and forms part of QatarEnergy’s efforts to grow its clean energy portfolio through low carbon ammonia production. Blue ammonia is seen as an important solution for reducing CO2 emissions.
Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi stated: “This facility consists of an ammonia production unit with a capacity of 1.2 million tons per year, along with an additional unit for CO2 injection and storage, with a capacity of 1.5 million tons per year. QatarEnergy will provide the new plant with more than 35 megawatts of electricity from the solar power plant currently being built in Mesaieed Industrial City, thereby becoming blue ammonia. This plant will enhance our ability to provide the world with low-carbon products, in line with the global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.”
He added: “In building this facility, we will rely on our own capabilities and expertise in the construction and operation of ammonia plants used for the production of fertilizers. This will be carried out in cooperation between QatarEnergy and Qatar Fertiliser Company – QAFCO.”
Al-Kaabi also noted: “The blue ammonia plant joins a list of QatarEnergy’s large and ambitious expansion projects in Qatar and around the world covering LNG, oil and gas exploration and production, petrochemicals, fertilizers, solar power, and more.”
He expressed gratitude towards those involved: “I thank the consortium implementing the project, consisting of ThyssenKrupp and CCC, as well as the working teams from QatarEnergy and QAFCO, whose efforts contributed to the realization of the project.” He also thanked Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for his support to Qatar’s energy sector.
With an investment estimated at about QAR 4.4 billion (approximately $1.21 billion USD), this new facility will benefit from Mesaieed Industrial City’s infrastructure—including one of the region’s largest petrochemical export ports—and is expected to begin operations by mid-2026.
