Texas A&M University Qatar and Maersk Oil Qatar recently announced that a team of Qatari high school students won the top prize at the
annual Summer Engineering Academy (SEA).
SEA is an elite STEM (science, technology, engineering and
math) program organized by the university and oil company. The winning students
had developed an innovation that could be used for extracting oil from oil
reservoirs. The team was made up of six students: Fajer
Almarzooqi, Fatma Al Abdulghani, Fay Al Sulaiti, Moza Al Kuwari, Saoud
Al Abdulla and Muneera Al Sulaiti.
“I am extremely happy with the students and their
performance,” Dr. Nayef Alyafei, a graduate of the university and current faculty
member and team mentor, said. “Although they are grade 11, they are showing us
all the necessary raw skills to be excellent engineers in the future. I am very
happy with this summer engineering academy experience as it is doing its job by
letting the students experience how to be engineers and giving them this option
to explore engineering before pursuing it as a career.”
The SEA event occurred simultaneously with the Future
Engineers Program, which featured more than 30 Qatari students developing
space-related projects.
