SABIC has introduced a new flame-retardant compound, LNP THERMOTUF WF0087N, for use in nano-molded components of consumer electronics. This material is the first PBT-based product for nano molding that combines flame retardancy with strong mechanical performance, including high impact resistance. The compound is designed for applications such as antenna splitters and structural components in smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches.

The new LNP THERMOTUF WF0087N compound has won a 2025 Edison Award. SABIC highlights its capability to address the growing demand for lightweight and durable metal-plastic hybrid components in consumer electronics. Jenny Wang, Director of Formulation & Application at SABIC Polymers Specialties business, stated: “As smartphones achieve new milestones in design, wireless connectivity and charging speed, the industry needs advanced materials that can keep pace.”

Nano molding technology (NMT) involves injecting plastic resin into a chemically treated metal surface to create a tightly bonded hybrid material. This process offers benefits such as lightweight designs and radio frequency transparency. The LNP THERMOTUF WF0087N compound adds thin-wall flame retardancy while maintaining bonding strength and mechanical properties like impact resistance.

The new grade also provides chemical resistance to harsh treatments and custom colorability for aesthetics. Its dielectric properties ensure high signal performance in devices with multiple antennas.

The Edison Awards recognize excellence in product development and innovation globally. The winners for 2025 were announced on April 2.
