SABIC has announced the launch of LNP THERMOCOMP WFC061I, a new compound that offers non-halogenated flame retardance for electric vehicle control units (EVCUs). The material is designed to enhance safety and functionality by protecting sensitive electronic parts from fire, smoke, impact, and moisture.

According to SABIC, the compound can replace metal in EVCU covers. This substitution results in reduced weight and increased design flexibility. It also provides an alternative to flame-retardant polymers that use halogenated additives, which may have environmental impacts. Additional features of the compound include colorability, low warpage for improved manufacturing yield, and high optical transmission suitable for precision laser welding. SABIC describes it as the first glass fiber-reinforced FR polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) material capable of being laser welded.

Jenny Wang, Director of Formulation & Application at SABIC Polymers Specialties business in APAC, stated: “The EVCU, which manages an EV’s electrical systems to ensure peak efficiency and a safe and enjoyable driving environment, relies on high-performance materials. Specialty resins must provide flame retardancy, strength, stability, light weight and precision manufacturing. Based on our broad understanding of automotive power engineering trends and requirements, SABIC developed its new LNP THERMOCOMP WFC061I compound to help protect the EVCU and optimize its reliability and functionality.”

The company notes that laser welding is enabled by the compound’s high optical transmission—20 percent at 3.0 mm thickness—which allows two plastic parts to be joined without adhesives or fasteners. This process can streamline assembly for manufacturers by saving time and potentially increasing production throughput.

LNP THERMOCOMP WFC061I is available globally.

The Edison Awards are given annually to recognize achievements in product development and innovation worldwide. The 2025 winners were announced on April 2.
