SABIC has launched a new polycarbonate copolymer resin, LNP ELCRES NPCRX9612U, designed without fluorine or other per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The company states this is the first product in its new family of PFAS-free resins and is certified under UL746G, which addresses non-fluorine and non-PFAS containing materials. The resin also provides UL94 V0 flame retardance at 1.5mm for thin-wall applications.
According to SABIC, the introduction of this material responds to tightening regulations around PFAS use in manufacturing. The new resin offers chemical resistance against harsh healthcare disinfectants and maintains impact performance. It is also biocompatible and available in custom colors, allowing for miniaturized medical device designs such as insulin pumps, diagnostic imaging equipment, and monitors.
“SABIC is investing in the research and development of new materials that can help OEMs get ahead of the curve in compliance and performance,” said Sergi Monros, vice president, SABIC Polymers, Specialties BU. “Our deep understanding of customers’ current and future application needs allows SABIC to be proactive in creating new grades that meet these requirements.”
This launch expands SABIC’s range of medical-grade thermoplastics. Other products include LNP LUBRILOY compounds, which utilize internal lubrication technology free from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or PFAS to provide wear resistance; and ULTEM HU resins—unreinforced polyetherimide (PEI) materials known for their mechanical strength as well as chemical and heat resistance.
The company says its growing portfolio aims to help manufacturers address evolving regulatory standards while meeting high-performance demands across various industries.
