A group of engineering students from the United Arab Emirates University (UAUE) that developed a biological sensor took third place in an international contest recently.

The fifth annual International Conference
on Electronic Devices, Systems and Applications (ICDESA) was held at the
American University of Ras Al Khaima. It was sponsored by the Global Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

UAEU’s team
of students included Musab Asad, Sultan Al Neyadi, Othman Al Aidaros and
Mahmoud Khalil. These students, who were supervised by Mousa Hussein, an associate professor of engineering, competed against undergraduate and postgraduate
students from around the world.

The UAEU
students’ project, “Single Port Bio-Sensor Design Using Metamaterial
Split Ring Resonator,” used resonant circuits to
sense biological samples. The sensor changes when different
electrical properties are applied, providing fast recognition of the biological samples being tested. It also costs less compared with current similar sensors using medical devices.
