Engineering company Siemens recently entered into a service deal that aims to ensure the operation, reliability and efficiency of Qatar’s future Umm Al Houl power plant for at least 25 years.

Under the long-term agreement, Siemens will provide the plant with preventive maintenance, instrumentation and controls service, and on-site technical assistance.

The Umm Al Houl facility is scheduled to be up and running by 2018. It will be located  approximately 10 miles south of Doha and is expected to be able to accommodate varying energy demands with a total electrical output of 2.5 gigawatts and a maximum of 163.2 million gallons of drinking water daily.

The new plant will feature six gas turbines, four steam turbines and 10 generators, all of which will be covered by the Siemens service agreement.

“The Umm Al Houl combined-cycle power plant will be an essential part of Qatar’s infrastructure, delivering approximately a quarter of the country’s installed power generation capacity,” Siemens Qatar CEO Fatih Sakiz said. “This latest agreement is reiteration of Siemens’ commitment to Qatar’s long-term vision and our understanding of the nation’s requirements. We have a long history in Qatar, and we are proud to be working with our partners to support sustainable economic growth.”
