A possible Foreign Military Sale for UH-60M Black Hawk Utility Helicopters and associated equipment to Saudi Arabia was approved by U.S. State Department Oct. 14.

The total amount of the negotiation is approximately $495 million (USD) and is reportedly in line with the United State’s interest to improve the security in the region. In addition, Saudi Arabia is a significant partner or political stability and economic progress in the Middle East.

The proposed sale, however, does not offer new technology nor change the basic military balance in Saudi Arabia. It also will not have a negative impact on the United State’s defense.

The primary companies to supply the sale are Sikorsky Aircraft Company in Stratford, Ct., and General Electric Aircraft Company in Lynn, Mass.

The helicopters will be used for research and rescue, disaster relief, humanitarian support, counter-terrorism and combat operation by the Royal Saudi Land Forces Aviation Command.

If approved, the sale would require a staff up to 60 U.S. government and contractor representatives who will visit Saudi Arabia for 60 months for equipment de-processing, fielding, system checkout, training and technical logistics support.
