The UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia), operating under the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, has continued to expand its humanitarian activities worldwide. Since its establishment in 2015, Suqia has partnered with various organizations domestically and internationally to implement over 1,000 sustainable water projects. These efforts have reached about 15 million people across 37 countries.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Suqia, commented on the organization’s ongoing work: “We continue to advance the path of goodness, giving and humanitarian work to consolidate the authentic legacy that was built by the late Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan – and that is today supported by the wise directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai – to build the best sustainable role model for humanitarian work and consolidate the UAE’s stature and global presence on the global humanitarian stage.”
Al Tayer further noted Suqia’s goals: “A decade since its inception, Suqia’s remarkable reach has extended beyond borders, embodying the nation’s inspiring commitment to alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Our goal is to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030, including Goal 6 that seeks to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. In line with the Year of Community, and based on our noble national values, we aim to expand our development impact, enhance social cohesion and empower communities around the world to become active partners in sustainable and comprehensive development, ensuring a more sustainable and brighter future for people everywhere.”
Suqia also oversees the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award. The award encourages innovation in water production, desalination, and purification using renewable energy sources such as solar power or wind energy. Over four cycles so far, it has recognized 43 winners from 26 countries whose projects have improved conditions in multiple communities globally. The prize pool totals USD 1 million across four categories: Innovative Projects Award, Innovative Research and Development Award, Innovative Individual Award, and Innovative Crisis Solutions Award.
In Tanzania specifically, Suqia is working with Emirates Red Crescent on a project funded by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This initiative aims to deliver clean drinking water through sustainable means to nearly one million people; as of now it has reached approximately 943,000 beneficiaries with completion expected in Q3 2025.
