During a recent meeting of the Abu Dhabi Business Women Council (ADBWC) and the United Nations (U.N.) Women, Her Excellency Maryam Mohammed Al-Rumaithi, chairwoman of the Emirates Business Women Council and chairwoman of the Executive Board of the ADBWC, spoke about the benefits associated with U.N. Women, a program of the United Nations focused on on empowering women and increasing their function in both Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates as a whole.
The program has already produced results. H.E. Al-Rumaithi of the U.N. Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women said, “The approach of empowering women continued under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and her role increased thanks to a special care by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi.”
Lakshmi Puri, assistant secretary to the general of the U.N. and deputy executive director of U.N. Women, said the role of the U.N. Entity for the Empowerment of Women focuses on supporting the policies of U.N. affiliated entities that are related to gender equality and the role of women in leadership and economic empowerment of women. These programs, she said, will make it much less difficult for women to receive entitlements in law, ethics and employment.
"Since its foundation, our country was aware of providing all the laws which would secure the rights of individuals without discrimination between the man and woman within an environment of equal opportunities and justice between the two sexes as well as freedom in choosing careers,” she said.
