Akmai's State of the Internet Report, a recent international study, cited Qatar as one of the countries in which fixed-line internet speeds are rapidly increasing.
The ranking is due in large part to a 2014 Internet speed boost from telecommunications provider Ooredoo.
On the global top 10 list, Qatar was ranked No. 8. The nation's average peak connection speed is 62.8 Mbps -- a 72 percent jump from last year. Qatar surpassed Luxembourg to take the No. 8 spot.
Ooredoo's free speed upgrade took place in October. After the upgrade, customers with 1 Mbps plans were upped to 10 Mbps and customers on 10 Mbps plans were upped to 25 Mbps. Additionally, all fiber customers now have doubled upload speeds.
The Akamai Report also indicated that with Ooredoo's continuing fiber upgrades, broadband connectivity in Qatar jumped 282 percent.
"We are striving to make Qatar the best-connected country in the world, and this report shows the qualitative impact Ooredoo is having on Internet speeds and Internet adoption across the country," Sheikh Saud Bin Nasser Al Thani, chief executive officer of Ooredoo Qatar, said. “Customers in Qatar know that Ooredoo offers the biggest, fastest network and this new report demonstrates the incredible strides we have taken in terms of average peak connection speeds and adoption rates on a global scale.”
Ooredoo began operations in 2011. Customers have seen continually improving upload and download speeds, as well as enjoying a fully digital voice network, Next Generation Mozaic TV, with high-definition programming and several other features.
