Gulftainer, the United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based port terminal management and logistics firm, recently handled two of Iraq’s largest liquid petroleum gas (LPG) storage vessels at Umm Qasr Logistics Centre (UQLC) in Basra’s Umm Qasr port.
The two large cylindrical LPG tanks each weigh more than 275 tons and are more than 164 feet long, making the tanks the largest cargo ever transported such a long distance in Iraq.
The logistics center in Umm Qasr was opened last year as part of a $150 million Gulftainer investment program in Iraq. It is strategically connected to Umm Qasr Port by an access road to allow easy transport between UQLC and Gulftainer’s Iraq Container Terminal facility.
The large LPG tanks were secured by logistics specialists at the UQLC facility while preparing the necessary customs clearance.
“The Umm Qasr Logistics Centre has been specifically designed to support this type of project cargo, including this type of LPG tank,” Bill Chalmers, Gulftainer’s general manager in Iraq, said. “Our expertise in managing project cargoes to the highest technical and safety standards was identified as a key factor in supporting the cargo management.”
The UQLC’s secure, 8 million-square-foot facility houses customs officials in an on-site administrative office along with warehouses, cold stores and offices.
