Indian engineering and construction companies have been answering the call as Kuwait works to build up important infrastructure and reconfigure its economy for the post-oil world.
A number of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firms from India have been contracted in recent years to work on major projects in the Gulf nation of Kuwait.
In just the last two years, Indian EPC companies have reported contract awards for new projects in Kuwait worth more that $5 billion.
In 2014, the Indian firm Larsen & Toubro worked on a project for Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity and Water and did work on KOC’s Gas Gathering Centre GC 30 project. Shapoorji Pallonji, another Indian EPC company, was also contracted last year for work on the Al Sabah Hospital and the Kuwait University Project.
Other Indian companies, such as Dodsal, Punj Lloyd and Simplex Projects, also started working on big EPC contracts in Kuwait last year, which totaled more than $4.15 billion.
This year, Larsen & Toubro signed another contract with Kuwait National Petroleum Corporation (KNPC) to help replace an out-of-date power substation at a refinery. That contract is worth $77 million.
And just last month, the EPC firm Essar Projects Limited won a joint venture contract alongside Italy’s Saipem worth more than $1.5 billion. That’s another KNPC project that will set up the Al-Zour Refinery Project (ZOR), Package-4.
As Indian companies continue to provide the expertise to build up Kuwait’s infrastructure, the two nations are set to strengthen economic and political ties.
