The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy recently held its 38th meeting, this one focused on developing its Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 plan.
The meeting's participants included government officials, oil industry executives, public health officials and environmental officials.
The Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 plan seeks to produce three quarters of Dubai's energy from clean sources by 2050. In consideration of this goal, the group first discussed and revised the structure of the current Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030. The 2030 plan supports the long-term production goals of the 2050 plan by setting goals for lowering demand by as much as 30 percent over the next 14 years.
The council also discussed a green transportation initiative that would lead to a first-in-the-region plan to cut emissions by 16 percent by 2021.
"We discussed 'No Vehicle Day,' an initiative to encourage people to make better use of public transportation, to preserve the environment and reduce carbon emissions," Secretary General of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi said. "The initiative was organized by the Dubai Municipality under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, crown prince of Dubai and chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, and will be implemented on Feb 21. The council intends to actively take part in the initiative."
