Dubai was ranked as the 16th most innovative city by a recent index designed to compare 28 global cities on macroeconomic measures of innovation.

Developed in collaboration with the Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry and PwC, the Dubai Innovation Index aims to determine Dubai's position in the innovative landscape and what needs to done to encourage new products and services.

While London was deemed the world's most innovative city, Dubai did rank ahead of places like Beijing, Milan, Mumbai and Shanghai. On specific measures of innovation, Dubai scored above average in terms of government support and building a culture of innovation and demonstrated superiority in output and performance. It achieved average scores for funding, as well as for political, economic and social environment factors.

The emirate scored low on infrastructure for innovation, in addition to skills and talent. Intellectual property and scientific collaborations with institutions were also suggested as areas that needed improvement.

With regard to the most innovative private sector industries, health care came out on top with media, while marketing and ICT were in second and third place, respectively.

"We hope the results of the survey will act as a catalyst for stimulating innovation in the private sector in Dubai and promote their participation in the process of innovation," Dubai Chamber President and CEO Hamad Buamim said.
