Abu Dhabi's Reem Mall,
expected to open in 2018, recently earned an Estidama 2 Pearl Design Rating from the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC), a rating that recognizes the $1 billion shopping development for its sustainable design.
The new mall, located on Reem Island, has been designed to ensure minimal energy and water use. The building's walls, roof and glazing were created with high-performance materials and offer high-efficient insulation. High-efficiency air conditioning and lighting systems have also been put in place, as well as efficient water irrigation systems and appliances.
"Reem Mall is committed to environmental sustainability and the sustainability goals of the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council and Abu Dhabi Vision 2030," Reem Mall Chief Operating Officer Shane Eldstrom said. "From the outset, we have strived to exceed the guidelines set out by the UPC by going above and beyond the minimum requirements."
Besides the design of Reem Mall, sustainability is also playing a part in its actual construction. At least 70 percent of onsite waste will be recycled and 20 percent of materials will be obtained from sources within 310 miles of the site.
The mall is being developed by National Real Estate Company and the United Projects for Aviation Services Company. It is expected to open in 2018.
