United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) recently announced that a research team of professors from the Department of Geology in the College of Science has been conducting a study of sea level changes in the UAE in collaboration with Sweden's Uppsala University.
The study will attempt to determine the geological phenomena caused by changes in the ancient climatic conditions and the accompanying sea-level fluctuations. A preliminary study had been done at Uppsala, where researchers made a geological survey of the coastal and internal parts close to the coast.
The team of researchers from UAEU consists of Dr. Ala Aldahan, Dr. Osman Abdelghany, Dr. Hasan Arman, Dr. Mahmoud Saima and Dr. Thomas Fowler. It is their goal to indicate the existence of shells and fossils of clams, snails, corals and algae from 1,600 to 28,000 years ago, which is well before previously published rates.
Dr. Ahmed Murad, acting dean of the College of Science, said that the college places the utmost importance on scientific research in contributing to the country’s development.
