Petroleum Institute signs research agreement with Solvay Group for lab in Abu Dhabi

The Petroleum Institute University and Research Center (PI) said it recently signed a technical research services agreement with Solvay Group that will allow it to establish an automated chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) formation laboratory in Abu Dhabi.

“Adding the automated chemical EOR Formulation Laboratory to the Petroleum Institute Research Center reinforces our previous efforts in EOR research particularly in the domains of chemical EOR, hybrid EOR and conformance processes,” PI President Thomas Hochstettler said.

The laboratory in Abu Dhabi will replicate proprietary robotic technologies that Solvay developed and used in many of the world’s most challenging oilfields. PI plans to use Solvay’s market expertise to customize the systems at its oil fields in Abu Dhabi.

“Solvay has made considerable investments in the past decade to develop innovative technologies in the field of EOR, and we are honored that PI recognized our technological leadership,” EOR of Solvay Vice President David Sorin said. “This agreement demonstrates our commitment to developing long-term relationships with our key partners, including through the transfer of sensitive technology."
