The Qatar Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) is urging caution when using augmented-reality apps such as Pokemon Go, Geocaching or Waze.
Pokemon GO, although not available officially in Qatar, uses mapping software that allows users to catch game characters via smartphone in real-world locations.
The CRA offers these safety and privacy tips to users of these apps::
- Stay alert, stay safe: Virtual reality combined with outdoor locations requires the same safety precautions as in any other real-world setting. Be aware of surroundings while walking in public and do not drive while using such apps, as this puts lives in danger.
- Be aware of privacy issues: Some apps access camera and location information within the smartphone. Be careful when sharing your location with strangers through apps, and be respectful of others' privacy when using the apps. Unauthorized entry to private property may be considered trespassing.
- Know your data plan: apps such as Pokemon Go use GPS services which could use a lot of data. Be aware of your data plan when using such apps to avoid astronomical bills.
