American University of Sharjah issued the following announcement on Feb. 22.

More than 50 students from the College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD) at American University of Sharjah (AUS) participated in a special conference held on campus that focused on the evolution of representational methodologies in the visual arts, as well as design education and practice.

The three-day conference, entitled “The Representation: Process and Practice Across Design Disciplines (PPADD)” was attended by Sheikh Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi; founder of the Sharjah-based Barjeel Art Foundation; Dr. Varkki Pallathucheril, Dean of CAAD; department heads, and other senior officials.

Organized by Kevin Mitchell, Acting Provost and Chief Academic Officer; Gregory Watson, Professor of Architecture; and Brian Dougan, Associate Professor of Architecture; the PPADD conference sought submissions that explored a broad range of representational strategies, methods and media in contemporary art and design education and practice. The conference considered the role that representation plays in reshaping and advancing ideas about graphic communication in both the academy and practice.

Faculty members from CAAD moderated discussion sessions with international lecturers from renowned universities who spoke on different topics including the role of representation in design, integrating digital and analogue processes to support design communication, pedagogical approaches to representation and communication, teaching design communication at the beginning of the curriculum, design communication across disciplines, visual communication and representation across cultures and much more.

Well-known Jordanian architect and keynote speaker, Rasem Jamal Badran, also presented a lecture entitled, “The Urban Thread, Not the Urban Threat: Reflections on the Narrative of Place and People.” He spoke about employing a methodological approach that defined architecture as a continuous dialogue between contemporary needs and historical inherited cultural values.
