American University of Sharjah issued the following announcement on May 9.

Maryam Belhoul, an active student in the Student Leadership Program (SLP) offered by the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) at American University of Sharjah (AUS) was among the winners at the Du Emirati Startup Challenge on recently held at Zayed University. She won third place.

With 18 teams competing, the Startup Challenge brought together the brightest minds in the UAE to pitch and turn a startup idea into a real, scalable business venture. The preferred presented ideas were business ideas concerning tech innovations, social entrepreneurship, and digital solutions.

Speaking on her achievement, Maryam Belhoul, a senior industrial engineering major, said:

“I went into this competition with a different mindset than usual. Although we all had our eyes on the prize, but I tried my best to learn and make the most out of this unique experience. The fact that we had time with mentors with different expertise, and were able to take their advice and apply it to our initial ideas made me realize how important it is to be humble and to appreciate criticism with an open mind. I encourage everyone with an idea, no matter how big or small, to pursue it with all their passion. Do not let the fear of failure control you – because if you never try, you will never know the true potential of your ideas.”

Dr. Moza Alshehhi, Dean of Students, said:

“We are delighted to hear that Maryam benefited from her participation in this competition. I congratulate her on a job well done in securing third place amongst 18 teams competing in the final stage of the challenge.”
