DIAMOND SCHMITT ARCHITECTS INC.: Significant Modern Theatres

Diamond Schmitt Architects Inc. issued the following announcement on May 28.

Gary McCluskie, Principal, was asked by a group of leading theatre publications in the US, UK and Germany to contribute an article to a study of significant modern theatres around the world that opened between 1950 and 2010. Gary had to select one theatre in Canada for which Diamond Schmitt Architects was not involved in the design. He chose the Festival Theatre (1953) in Stratford, Ontario.

This theatre, originally housed in a large tent and later enclosed in a building, introduced the thrust stage conceived by legendary British theatre director Sir Tyronne Guthrie and set designer Tanya Moiseiwitsch. This new stage configuration revolutionized the production of Shakespeare’s plays and continues to advance the theatrical experience of contemporary performance today.

This article will be presented at the International Theatre Engineering & Architecture Conference (ITEAC) in London, England on June 4, 2018.
