FREE UNIVERSITY OF BRUSSELS: Annemie Schaus is elected rector of the ULB

Free University of Brussels issued the following announcement on Sept. 8.

This Tuesday, September 8, Annemie Schaus, professor at the Faculty of Law and Criminology, was elected rector of the ULB for a term of 4 years. This is the second woman appointed to this post at ULB. Rector Yvon Englert will induct his successor at the start of the academic year on Friday September 11.

Annemie Schaus was born on March 18, 1965, in Charleroi, to parents who recently arrived from Saint-Vith in the German-speaking Community. His childhood was spent in German and French. She has lived in Brussels since she was 18.

She holds a law degree from ULB (1988) and international law (1989).

His research and teaching at the Faculty of Law and Criminology of the ULB mainly focus on public law, the intersections between domestic law and international law, in particular the implementation of international treaties in a federal state and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, the vast majority of which find their source in international and European law. She also coordinates a rights and freedoms clinic within this faculty, crowned with the Socrate Prize, 2019.

Despite this full time, she has always kept one foot in the practice by remaining a lawyer at the Brussels Bar - where she practiced five years full time after her studies (1988-1992), in particular in the cabinet of Roger Lallemand. when he defended the law decriminalizing abortion.

Her specialization in rights and freedoms led her to get involved in associations for the defense of human rights such as the international NGO European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) based in Berlin. The sister NGO, the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR-New York) enabled him to work in particular with the eminent Michaël Ratner, principal counsel to Julian Assange.

Annemie Schaus was Dean of the Faculty of Law and Criminology (September 2007- January 2011) and Vice-Rector for Institutional Relations and Knowledge Transfer (2011-2012) and Academic Policy (2012-2016).

She is the second woman appointed to the post of rector at ULB, after Françoise Thys-Clément, first woman rector of a French-speaking university.

These results will be final at the end of the appeal period which ends on Wednesday September 9, 2020 at 1 p.m. The transfer of power between Yvon Englert and Annemie Schaus will take place on Friday 11 September during the start of the academic year. The new rector will formally take up her duties on Monday, September 14, the day of the start of the academic year.

Let us recall that according to the principle of alternation exact sciences / human sciences, the new rector of ULB comes this time from the human sciences. The rector, statutory representative of the academic body, is elected by secret ballot by the members of this body.

This election was initially to be held in May 2020 but had to be postponed due to health measures related to COVID.
