Ooredoo recently announced the acquisition of a new spectrum frequency (LTE 800) that will improve 4G coverage, doubling its capacity.
The upgrade is part of the company's three-year, $124 million modernization strategy to improve its service.
Currently, data service coverage is provided via LTE 1800 (4G) and UMTS 900 (3G) spectrum. LTE 800 is being added to a number of sites around Muscat.
Ooredoo was the first company in the country to offer 3G at the lower
900 frequency in 2013. The 4G comes with no additional costs to Ooredoo clients.
“Not only will this cutting-edge development bring significantly improved coverage and speed, but it will eliminate any related battery-life issues that were previously associated when enabling 4G on smart devices," Ooredoo CEO Greg Young said. "Previously, phones would switch between 3G and 4G as customers moved to different locations. The new, continuous 4G 800 coverage means that phones are not constantly switching between 4G and 3G and battery consumption is reduced."
