The Qatar Public Works Authority awarded the Paris-based construction firm Bouygues Travaux Publics two contracts Sept. 29 to design and construct sewage tunnels in the Gulf nation’s capital of Doha.
Bouygues Travaux Publics is a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction and will be working in partnership with the local Qatari contractor UrbaCon Trading & Contracting.
The two contracts are worth approximately $625 million, of which Bouygues Travaux Publics will share the amounts of roughly $325 million.
Jean-Philippe Trin, Bouygues deputy CEO, said the firm is proud to have been chosen by the Qatar Public Works Authority.
“For this ambitious project, we have developed an innovative technical solution that will enable us to address the customer's concerns effectively and fully meet their expectations,” Trin said.
The construction will be on two major sewage tunnels in Doha. The north section will be 16 kilometers long and 3 meters wide, while the south section will be 14 kilometers long and 4.5 meters wide.
The contracts are part of a strategic project for sewage collection, pumping and treatment services in the south of Doha, known as the Inner Doha Resewerage Implementation Strategy (IDRIS). In recent years, the Qatari capital has experienced sustained population growth, which has necessitated the redesign and expansion of its sewage system.
