First EVH reference center outside U.S. opens in Kuwait

With the opening of its Kuwait-based facility, Chest Diseases Hospital (CDH) has become the first endoscopic vessel harvesting (EVH) reference center outside of the United States.

About 90 percent of vessels harvested in the United States are taken via EVH; however, now the Kuwait CDH facility will offer a combination of classroom lectures and hands-on training.

Three surgeons from Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates attended the first regional training, which was led by CDH Cardiac Surgery Department Chairman Dr. Tarek Aleinati, at the hospital in April.

Trainees took part in case reviews and observed coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) operations before sitting for a written exam. They also had the opportunity to meet with the hospital’s OR teams, harvesters and doctors.

The training culminated with a gala dinner at CDH, with the highest scoring written exam trainee, Dr. Khaled Fouad from Egypt, being recognized.
